DANCE INVERSIONInternational Contemporary Dance Festival
International Contemporary Dance Festival DANCEINVERSION celebrates its 20th anniversary!
During these years Moscow has welcomed almost 90 choreographers as well as numerous professionals from:
5 continents and the Islands of New Zealand, Ireland and Cuba,
The Festival is proud to have premiered works by Angelin Preljoçaj, José Montalvo, Jan Fabre, Wim Vandekeybus, Édouard Lock, Nacho Duato, Trisha Brown, Doug Varone, Josef Nadj, Paul Lightfoot and Sol León, Emio Greco, Lemi Ponifasio, Shen Wei, Akram Khan, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui, and Dada Masilo. Today they are masters of contemporary dance, widely known and loved by the audience. The Festival introduced such national legends as the Alvin Ailey Company, NDT and Jiří Kylián, as well as Jean-Christophe Maillo and Carolyn Carlson, Sasha Waltz, Mauro Bigonzetti, and Ohad Naharin. 20 years ago the Festival legitimized and popularized Russian contemporary dance. It has provided Russian choreographers such as Eugene Panfilov, Tatiana Baganova, Sergei Smirnov, Olga Pona with the platform to become world renown. We strive to do our best for our domestic audience. Our main mission has always been the discovery of new names and new styles of dance art. This Festival remains true to this ethos and includes the names of both professional artists and exciting newcomers.
In recent years we have focused upon the importance of showing how dance development is influenced by national cultures and enlightened by new features. The Kukai Dantza company shows an amazing synthesis of the Spanish Basque spirit and traditional dance theatre as expressed in the performance Oskara. Marcos Morau as director has done an incredible job and elevated his standing in the field of dance. Michelle Dorrance boldly synthesizes the symbol of American dance culture, step, with a variety of contemporary gestures.
For the first time, we have invited a troupe from the Lebanon with the incredibly interesting choreographer Omar Rajeh. #Minaret is a demonstration of pain and a cry for the sake of saving the world from destruction.
We have discovered Scandinavia through the troupe of Jo Strømgren. Now, the National Opera and Ballet Theatre of Norway comes to us with a ballet based on the play by Henrik Ibsen, Hedda Gabler. This is a modern interpretation of the famous classic.
We are thrilled to host a new and fascinatingly beautiful version of The Rite of Spring performed by the Chinese Peacock Contemporary Dance Company. Its leader Yang Liping has proven herself to be a wonderful dancer and talented choreographer.
Moscow will also welcome the world-famous Ballet of the Opéra de Lyon. The Belgian choreographic tandem of Peeping Tom show an unusual but very relevant modern society performance. We are proud to welcome back our friend Paul Lightfoot and the great team at NDT with incomparable performances from Crystal Pite and Marco Goecke. The legendary director and winner of a prestigious British Laurence Olivier award, Akram Khan, will visit Moscow for the first time. With his team, he will introduce new work, the world premiere of which we will present this summer. This year is also a jubilee year for our colleagues at the Golden Mask Festival, which celebrates its 25th anniversary. Therefore, at the end of the program, we will jointly present the Moscow premiere of the Autobiography written by the famous Wayne McGregor and performed by his company.
This anniversary of the DANCEINVERSION Festival is not our final destination. We continue our search and gaze into the future of contemporary dance.
